Description
Elasticity is one of the oldest physical properties. It is expressed by a proportionality between the applied stress (σ) and the deformation (γ): σ = G.γ (Hooke's law). The absence of resistance to shear deformation (G' = 0) indicates liquid-like behavior. Long considered specific to solids, shear elasticity is now identified in liquids at the submillimeter scale. A non-zero shear elasticity is a promise of discoveries of new properties. Among them, we show that confined liquids are able to convert the mechanical energy in thermal waves. We will exploit the capacity of conversion to develop a new generation of micro-hydrodynamics (Patent). Inelastic Neutron or X-ray Scattering will be used to show that the dynamics (phonons) of the substrate is modified when a liquid flows on the surface. Proposals will be submitted to Large Research Facilities (ILL, ESRF) to obtain beam time. Finally, we will strengthen our collaborations with theoreticians. Keywords: Confined liquids, wetting, Imaging, phonons.
