Expérimental Description
Single-photon detection is essential for quantum technologies, including secure communications. While superconducting nanowire detectors are well established in the near-infrared, extending their operation to the mid-infrared (MIR) and terahertz (THz) ranges remains challenging. High-critical-temperature superconductors such as YBCO (Tc = 85 K) offer promising prospects for more accessible and broadband detectors. However, rapid heat dissipation into the substrate prevents efficient hotspot formation and single-photon detection. Suspended YBCO nanowires, recently developed at Thales, could overcome this limitation.
This joint Master 2/PhD project, involving Thales, LPEM and LPENS and funded by the French ANR (BRIGHT project), aims to investigate and control the vibrational properties of suspended YBCO bridges to understand and optimize heat transfer. Together with LPENS, we will develop an experimental setup to probe the mechanical vibrations of nanoscale objects. The Master 2 internship will implement the setup at room temperature using available semiconductor cantilevers. Electrostatic actuation will enable the exploration of nonlinear mechanical vibrations and photothermal effects. The subsequent PhD will focus on systematic studies of YBCO bridges provided by Thales, extending the setup to cryogenic temperatures for in-operando characterization.
Candidates should have strong experimental skills.
