The Higgs mode in a superconductor is a collective oscillation of the amplitude of its superconducting order parameter. In 2H-NbSe₂, where superconductivity coexists with charge-density-wave order, Raman spectroscopy reveals a peak commonly attributed to this mode. Yet its observation in the E₂g symmetry channel remains difficult to explain.
Could this signal reveal pair-density-wave superconductivity, an unconventional state in which Cooper pairs carry finite momentum? This Master’s internship will explore this possibility through analytical calculations and numerical modelling. You will develop a microscopic model, investigate its symmetries and collective excitations, and calculate Raman spectra for comparison with experiments.
The project offers an opportunity to develop skills in many-body theory and superconductivity while tackling an open question connecting fundamental physics with experimental observations. The 4–5-month internship will take place at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany.
